Bill Boswell started in golf course design in 1984 and was accepted as a member in the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) in 1993. Born in Augusta, Georgia, two blocks from the Augusta National Golf Club, Bill developed an early passion for the game and pursued golf design, graduating with a degree in Architecture from Clemson University.
“I was fortunate to land a job with Robert Trent Jones Sr. in his European Office. During a golf boom, we had up to 12 projects under construction at one time. Overall, I contributed in designing in over 30 courses during my time there. I returned to the states and worked as a head designer for Dr. Michael Hurdzan in Columbus, Ohio. In 1995 I returned to Georgia, working a short time with Willard Byrd before starting my own company Boswell Golf Design, Inc in 1996.”
Bill has a background in Architecture and Land Planning, allowing him to fully evaluate a site for the project. Determining the overall scope or “Big Picture,” it is important to explores multiple options and possibilities emphasizing the long-term future potential a site can possess. For the past four years, bill has worked with Marsh Benson on a wide variety of projects as an assistant in his Land Planning/Project Management Consulting company - wmbimagine.
Bill Boswell partnered with Troy Vincent (ASGCA) in design of the Jekyll Island Golf Master Plan.
At Boswell Golf Design, developing a strong strategy while allowing playability is the principle of our golf course design. A well-designed hole should present the player with several options. If a player correctly executes a shot that challenges a hazard, he will be rewarded with a much easier following shot. The overall course should have a variety of holes and challenges while being capable to change strategy day-to-day. The routing should provide the flexibility to adjust and grow.
We “read” the natural features and character of the site and determine what type of feel and personality the course should have. We practice Economy of Design: evaluating all aspects of the design to insure the course is being built without needless extra cost, and will follow our well-organized budget.
“The goal of the golf course architect is to design a great golf course. A golf course must, like life, offer intrigue, diversity, mystery and the opportunity to experiment; it must require creativity, problem-solving, and challenge your limits and test your character.”
While working in Europe with Robert Trent Jones Sr. I was involved in the remodeling of Valderrama Golf Club, prior to the 1997 Ryder Cup Matches. One of the improvements was hole #4. The picture above
shows my actual sketch given to the shaper before construction.
Note that the green is slightly different from the sketch. The two front levels were combined into a larger single terrace. Often times during shaping, slight adjustments or even major modifications are made to the design.
