Thank you for allowing me the time to introduce myself, my company, and some of my experiences and thoughts in golf course design.
I started in golf course design in 1984 and was accepted as a member in the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) in 1993. Born in Augusta, Georgia, two blocks from the Augusta National Golf Club, I developed an early passion for the game. I graduated with a degree in Architecture from Clemson University.
Early in my career, I worked for Robert Trent Jones Sr. for eight years, in his European Office in Spain. We completed 26 projects during that time. I spent my last year in Europe working in Madeira and returned to the states to work with golf course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan for three years until 1995. I returned to Georgia, and I started my own company Boswell Golf Design, Inc. in 1996.
With a background in Architecture and Land Planning, I feel my strongpoint is exploring different options the site has to offer. Exploring various routing, developing a variety of preliminary plans is crucial before finalizing the Final Plan. During construction I am a "hands-on" architect working closely with the shapers and contractor to work the all important details into the design, in doing this I can closely watch the cost to insure the project is completed on budget.
Recently, I have been working with Marsh Benson, assisting him on a variety of land planning and event coordinating projects. I have learned an invaluable amount from Marsh, especially the “process” of organizing the project from start to finish.
Over the years I also developed a close relationship with Bill Womac as a consultant regarding construction and turfgrass issues. Bill has been a golf course superintendent since 1968 and a Certified Superintendent since 1985. His knowledge and experience in the turfgrass field contributes tremendously to the design and maintenance of our projects.
For the past 5 years, I have been involved in developing Nature Trail Golf.* It is a new recreation/sport using a reduced flighted golf balls - golf played at 1/3 scale (1/9 the area). Designing courses combined with nature trails through picturesque landscapes. A more fun laid-back game, where nine holes can be played in 30 - 45 minutes. Sincerely,
William F. Boswell
